History of the Band

Tenbury Teme Valley Band celebrates its Tenth Anniversary in 2001. In 1991 Roy and Mary Osborne created Tenbury Music Workshop. A small group of children attended the first rehearsal held at Tenbury Town Library. These first members played only clarinets, trumpets and violins! No player had received more than 6 months tuition. Numbers of players gradually increased as did the standard of playing.

From these very humble beginnings Tenbury Teme Valley Band was born. There are now 40+ members, ranging in age from 9 years to 50 years. All members are offered tuition and a full range of woodwind and brass instruments is played. All instrumentalists take London College of Music or Associated Board of the Royal School of Music examinations. Four young people have attained grade 8 standard and we are proud to announce that one eighteen year old has recently obtained her London College of Music Teaching Diploma.

In 1996 Tenbury Teme Valley Band was honoured to receive an award from the Arts Council of England for £49,862. This enabled the Band to purchase the necessary instruments to raise the profile of the Band and to improve the sound quality. The Band can now perform much more demanding music and is developing a wide repertoire.

Members wear a smart red and black uniform and pride themselves on their deportment and appearance. Ties jumpers and banners display the Band's logo.

Tenbury Teme Valley Band is a concert band which has also entered  various musical festivals. As a result of winning the Herefordshire Festival Wind Band Section the band was presented with a trophy for obtaining the highest mark of the entire festival.

As the band has become more well known it has performed at many prestigious events including the NAPE Festival at the Wembley Conference Centre in London and the Ludlow Festival.

Two concerts a year are presented in the town of Tenbury Wells, a Midsummer Concert in June and a Christmas Concert. Details of these events can be found under  Engagements from  the main menu or click here. In the future we hope the band will continue to go from strength to strength and have every reason to believe that it will do so.
